This week I started to make some rough 3D models to help me understand and visualize the form of the potential final character. The idea is from my doodles. I like drawing organic, awkward-looking monsters. They are everywhere in my notebook.
Because the form is so organic, it was hard for me to bend the wires to the desired shape. So I went directly to aluminum foil. By tracing the turn around view one-one on paper, I was able to follow that and make my aluminum model.
Since my character doesn't have very much gesture. I decided to also take some time to familiarize myself with working with clay. The one I tried was the 24-hours air dry clay. I used some foil to make the 'core' and started covering it with clay. It worked pretty well in terms of softness and flexibility. However, because I didn't have any shaping tools, I couldn't get very deep into details. My plan was to let the body dry first and then do the arms and legs. Unfortunately, when I looked at it the next day, it started cracking.
My next step will be:
Do research on different kinds of clay and the right way to work with them.
Start drawing turn around view for the next 3 characters.
Get some clay tools.
